This month’s recipient of the Martin City 3rd Thursday donation is Harvesters. Forty percent of households turning to Harvesters include at least one adult who is working. Rising food and energy prices make it difficult for working families to make ends meet. Harvesters and its network of agencies provide a helping hand to tens of thousands of people in need every week. They are a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and related household products and have been helping people in need since 1979 by:

Collecting food and household products from community and industry sources
Distributing those products and providing nutrition services through a network of nonprofit agencies
Offering leadership and education programs to increase community awareness of hunger and generate solutions to alleviate hunger

“3RD THURSDAY IN MARTIN CITY” – GENERAL INFORMATION

The goal of “3rd Thursdays in Martin City” is to support local community organizations by donating a percentage of sales from Martin City businesses during a select period of time, on the third Thursday of each month. 10% from sales generated between 5:00 and 9:00 pm at participating Martin City businesses will be donated to a different organization each month.

If you shop at the below Martin City businesses on December 19th between 5 – 9 pm, they will donate 10% of the nights revenues to Harvesters!

This month’s recipient is Ozanam Youth Facility in South Kansas City. Ozanam has helped more than 6,000 children get their lives back on track. Located on a 96-acre campus, Ozanam provides a wide array of therapeutic options and a dedicated staff of more than 150 professionals.

Martin City gets “Back in the Swing” by supporting breast cancer survivors at our monthly Third Thursday event, October 17th, 5-9pm. This month’s recipient is Back in the Swing, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting joyful, healthy and proactive living through innovative fund-raising events, inspiring survivorship programs, and clinical research in an academic medical setting.

Founded in 2000, Back in the Swing focuses exclusively on the survivor — the person — in partnership with fun-loving, passionate supporters of breast cancer survivors across the country. Unlike other organizations that focus on breast cancer — the disease — Back in the Swing champions the survivor and his or her unique zest for getting back in the swing of life. You can start participating right now by joining their Facebook community!

3rd Thursday in Martin City – August 2013

The August 3rd Thursday event is just around the corner – Thursday, August 15th from 5-9pm. This month’s recipient is the KC Mounted Patrol.

The Mounted Patrol has eight officers and a sergeant along with eleven donated horses. Although the Mounted Patrol section is a budgeted unit within the police department, there are unexpected expenses that go beyond normal financial planning. The 501c3 not-for-profit organization called the Friends of the Kansas City Missouri Mounted Patrol helps by purchasing items needed and by assisting with unexpected expenses.

Some of the needs include horses, equipment for the horses and officers, training equipment, facility updates (arena footing, fence repairs on outside arena, etc.), the need for outside professional training of officers and horses and unexpected medical treatment of horses. Donations are tax exempt.

July 3rd Thursday is fast approaching!

The July Third Thursday event is fast approaching – Thursday, July 18th. This month’s recipient is the Don Harman Memorial Summer Slam Softball Tournament.

The family of FOX4 meteorologist Don Harman, who committed suicide, hosts an annual slowpitch, co-ed softball tournament to benefit the foundation established after his death. This is a men’s D/E USSSA sanctioned tournament.

The actual tournament is on Saturday, July 27th at Blue Valley Sports Complex, located at 137th and Switzer in Overland Park, Kansas. First place in each division will receive $300 cash as well as a new bat and 12 pairs of batting gloves! And LOTS of raffle items this year!

Calling all dog enthusiasts in the Kansas City area…

Clear your calendars from 5-9 pm on Thursday, June 20th because Wayside Waifs is coming to “3rd Thursday” in Martin City! Wayside Waifs is a charitable animal shelter whose purpose is to place adoptable companion animals in responsible homes. Wayside is the largest pet adoption center in Kansas City, placing over 5,400 animals each year in loving forever homes. Wayside does not euthanize adoptable animals, and there are no time limits for animals in their care.

A tent will be set up next to Sidelines Custom floral where you can visit with dogs from 6:00-7:15pm. In addition to the dogs, The South 71 Cruiser car club (from Belton) will be in the Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse parking lot and seven artists will be showing in the restaurant.

First Spring “3rd Thursday” in Martin City!

Yes, we know it still feels like winter!

The March Third Thursday event is fast approaching – Thursday, March 21st. This month’s recipient is Heartland Therapeutic Riding.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding provides equine-assisted therapy through the movement of and human interaction with the horse. Early intervention hippotherapy is provided for special needs children by a physical or an occupational therapist. Therapeutic sports riding is available for children and adults with disabilities. It is taught by Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International–certified instructors.
