Travel & Leisure lists Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse as one of the Best Steakhouses in the U.S.!

Best-steakhouses-in US

How exciting is this…. Travel & Leisure Magazine named Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse in Martin City one of the best steakhouses in the U.S.!!

Here’s some history on how it all got started…..

Jess and Jim’s Steak House opened for business in April of 1938, by two best of friends, Jess Kincaid and Jim Wright.  They started their business at 135th & Holmes as a small bar and grill and the tornado in 1957 moved them to their present location in Martin City, Missouri.

Although they were far south of the city, they believed that good food, good service and fair prices would make the drive worthwhile.  It appears they were right.

Jess got out of the business after starting a family, leaving Jim to run the business alone.  Jim hired his cousin, R.C. Van Noy, to work nights and host and manage the dining room. This worked well, Jim in the kitchen and R.C. in the dining room.

In 1972, Calvin Trillin wrote an article in Playboy Magazine that brought Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse national fame (they named a steak after it!).

Jess & Jim have since passed. R.C. has also passed in October of 2002. Mike and David (his sons) have owned Jess & Jim’s and RC’s Restaurant (across the street)  since 1990. Now the 4th generation is working and grooming to take over the business someday.

Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse will be celebrating their 75th Birthday this year!

In celebration of their 75th Birthday, they will have a 75 oz Steak Challenge – you have to eat a whole 75 oz steak AND twice baked potato in order to win!  More details coming soon…. time to start stretching your stomachs!

135th Street Construction Progress Report

ConstructionSign

Please excuse our mess!

Once all of the construction of 135th St. is complete (3 years), Martin City will be beautiful with new sidewalks, decorative benches & trash receptacles, street banners and possibly even hanging plants.  A whole new look!

There are two reasons you see a mess on 135th Street:

  1. AT&T moving their cable on the Right of Way in anticipation of actual construction and…
  2. The gas company moving their lines on the asphalt.  Time Warner is not far behind and KCPL has erected some new poles from Holmes Rd. to Oak St.

Phase 1 of 135th St. construction (Holmes Rd. to Oak St.) will begin this year with bids going out from the City of KCMO this spring.  Construction will probably last through next spring if not longer and entail new pavement, water lines, adding parallel parking spaces, new light poles and new sidewalks.

There will be lanes open the entire time!  You will be able to travel east and west across 135th St. at all times.  When completed it will be ultra-pedestrian friendly and allow MC-CID to plan some outdoor “street festival” type events around 3rd Thursdays.

We are considering a”Dirtiest Car Contest” on Facebook as well as several others during the construction phases and also plan to showcase our construction workers who will be with us for a while!

Your patience is appreciated and will be rewarded!

Water Main Break!

watermainbreak

Thanks to KCMO’s Water Department for their fast response to a 20 foot high water gush that started at 3:30 am on Friday, 12/28 just west of RC’s Restaurant on 135th Street.  It threatened to disrupt hundreds of  RC reservation bookings for New Year’s weekend if the water was turned off for an extended time.  David Van Noy, owner of RC’s, reports that the water department personnel who were fabulous in working with him to keep the water off for only a few hours Friday afternoon.  RC’s went on to have a great weekend business-wise and the Water Department guys got a free RC’s lunch on Friday.  Great customer service KCMO!
