Our Own Jess & Jim’s Makes The List Of 30 Things To Know About KC!

JessJims

How about this?! Our own Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse is #3 on the list of thing you need to know about #KC!

Straight from the article:

“Kansas City is full of surprises. While the name conjures images of cows and cornfields, KC was once known for its sinful ways, and has been home to a number of colorful characters past and present.”

3. KC Strip Steaks Put New York’s To Shame

Seriously, how could there possibly be any doubt? Kansas City is the third-largest beef capital in the United States, and the Big Apple…isn’t. Chow down on LOCAL beef at Jess and Jim’s, named America’s best steakhouse by none other than Playboy Magazine.

Martin City Pizza and Tap Room Brings Small Town Brewing to South KC

When we think of signature Kansas City dining and nightlife, we tend to think of downtown. But places like the Martin City Brewing Company in South Kansas City are looking to change that, without losing their small town feel.

As featured in The Pitch, the Martin City Brewing Company has already been making a splash in the KC dining scene. With a delicious seasonal menu prepared by ambitious and passionate chefs, the Brewing Company features one of a kind signature macaroni and cheese dishes, garlic-infused fried egg sandwiches, and risotto balls, just a few of the offerings.

The Pitch article cites an hour-long wait for a table—pretty impressive for a small pub on the outskirts of the metro—but also a Cheers-like hometown atmosphere, which has definitely contributed to the success of the family-owned restaurant.

mc-brewery

Co-owner Matt Moore’s grandfather once owned and operated a pub in the same 100-year-old building that the Martin City Brewing Company now occupies. Moore’s grandfather not only operated the Martin City Pub, but also created the aforementioned Jess & Jim’s and R.C.’s Restaurant and Lounge just down the street. When Moore bought back the building (after being the Martin City Pub, it housed a handful of other businesses, most recently a Chinese restaurant), he had the intention of converting it back into a small town bar and café and that’s exactly what he’s done.

martin city brewing company

The Martin City Brewing Company is already doing more business than our current location can really handle,” says Moore. “And we don’t even actually have a brewery.” That’s about to change with the opening of the Martin City Pizza and Tap Room right next door.

Housed in a formerly vacant building, the Martin City Pizza and Tap Room will not only allow the Martin City Brewing Company to live up to its name but it will also expand their accommodations to add pizza and home grown beer.

Martin City Brewery

Moore has invested $320,000 in new equipment and $680,000 in rehab/new construction costs to bring the microbrewery to life.  The new restaurant is expected to bring in around 20 new jobs right away but if the success of the Martin City Brewing Company is any indication of what’s to come, this little business is likely to grow quickly, especially with the upsurge in popularity of local specialty breweries and microbreweries.

Where might you find the next up-and-coming Kansas City dining hotspot?  Why in Martin City Missouri of course!

About Martin City

Annexed by Kansas City in 1963, Martin City sits on the southeast corner of the metro area, with the Saeger Woods Conservation Area and Jerry Smith Park separating it from Grandview. In 2005, the Martin City Community Improvement District was launched as an economic development tool to help improve Martin City through master planning in infrastructure, transportation, appearance, safety and security policies, marketing campaigns, and special events. The 300-acre political subdivision includes over 75 primarily family-owned local businesses like the Martin City Brewing Company.

Martin City CID Offers Security Program to Businesses

martin city security program

FACT: Businesses small and large continue to suffer economic and personal loss from the criminal segment of today’s society.

FACT: Increasingly, the private sector is incurring significant costs in an effort to provide their own protection of property.

SOLUTION: If you are a Martin City business, you can join the MC-CID Security Program!

The Martin City Community Improvement District offers all Martin City businesses the opportunity to join the MC-CID Security Program The MC-CID Security Program is a partnership between the Martin City CID, the Martin City businesses and Orion Security Inc. We offer ONE level of participation to all businesses electing to enroll in the program.

The MC-CID Security Program provides services 365 days between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m.  The officer on duty makes 6-7 district circulations per evening and will shine a light on all participating business properties to detect suspicious activities. Should suspicious activities be detected, the officer will call the property owner and Kansas City Police Department, if warranted.  The MC-CID Security Program coordinates all security monitoring with alarm companies installed by the business. MC-CID keeps a log of each incident per night.  All incidents are posted monthly at the Board of Directors meeting and shared with the Kansas City Police Department.

On December 24th at 1:10 a.m. Christmas Eve morning, the CID Security Program noticed Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse had a water leak on the second floor.  Because they were able to notify the owners in a timely manner, the problem was addressed and it was back to business as usual for Jess & Jim’s Christmas Eve patrons.

“We can’t express enough how thankful we are that our security program helped us out that night,” said Mike VanNoy, Jess & Jim’s owner. “We had a pipe break inside the Restaurant.  We got a call at home from our security telling us water was coming out the second floor.  We got down here and got the main water line  shut off.  If it wasn’t for the security company, the water could have run for 8 hours but instead it was only a couple of hours!”

The annual cost to a Martin City business is $500 per Martin City property, or $1.36 per day, which is less than a small cup of coffee at Starbucks!  In addition to your annual payment, the MC-CID also pays an annual fee to offset the direct cost to the business.

Join us for the Last 3rd Thursday event of the year!

Thursday, December 19th, 5-9pm

This month’s recipient of the Martin City 3rd Thursday donation is Harvesters.  Forty percent of households turning to Harvesters include at least one adult who is working. Rising food and energy prices make it difficult for working families to make ends meet. Harvesters and its network of agencies provide a helping hand to tens of thousands of people in need every week. They are a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and related household products and have been helping people in need since 1979 by:

  • Collecting food and household products from community and industry sources
  • Distributing those products and providing nutrition services through a network of nonprofit agencies
  • Offering leadership and education programs to increase community awareness of hunger and generate solutions to alleviate hunger
