In the meantime, the CID has met with the KCMO Project Manager for 135th St., Damon Hodges, and stressed how we want an effective working relationship with the city with plenty of communication.

There will be lanes open the entire time!

Martin City customers and local residents will be able to travel east and west at all times accessing all our businesses along 135th St.  When completed it will be ultra-pedestrian friendly and allow MC-CID to plan some outdoor “street festival” type events around 3rd Thursdays.

Funding for Phase 2 – Oak St. to the east side of Wornall Road

Funding for Phase 2 has been approved.  Mayor Sly James and the City Council have approved $925,000 for construction funding in the FY Budget 2013-14.  This will be added to an additional $1,000,000 of PIAC funding and enable us to complete design work and hopefully begin construction in the spring of 2014.

Coping with Construction

We will be video-taping the construction progress and interviewing our workers who will be with us for months at a time.  How about a “Dirtiest Car Contest” on Facebook as well with a big car wash prize?  For sure we want to hear your “construction stories” and we will have frequent updates on this Blog.

Your patience is appreciated and will be rewarded!

Kansas City, MO April Ballot Questions

April 2, 2013 Election

The Martin City Community Improvement District is happy to assist in informing the public about the critical ballot issues upcoming in the April 2013 election.  If you are an eligible Kansas City voter, please take time to educate yourself and then cast your votes on April 2nd.

Question 1:  YES

Question1

The City of KCMO is asking voters to APPROVE Question 1 which will renew approximately one-third of Kansas City’s Health Levy that is set to expire next year.  The Question requests that renewal of 22 cents of the current tax levy be dedicated to ambulance service, emergency medical services and hospital and public health purposes for a period of 9 years. (2022). It serves the uninsured and the under-insured of Kansas City.

Please note the city’s safety net providers who benefit from this levy:

Truman Medical Center

Northland Health Care Access

Cabot Westside Health Center

Samuel Rogers Health Center

Swope Health Services

KC Clinic

These safety net providers provide more than $130,000,000 in UNCOMPENSATED health care services every year.  Also note these organizations provide more than 8500 jobs by employing doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals.

Last year a portion of the levy helped pay for more than 140,000 health care visits in Kansas City.  One out of every 10 Kansas Citians benefited from the levy.

If you own a home assessed at $100,000, you will pay less than $4.00 per month to help provide essential health care services in our community.

Question 2:  YES

VisitKCBanner

Kansas City is asking voters to APPROVE Question 2.  This Question closes a loophole in Kansas City ordinances that authorizes collection of the city’s hotel/motel tax that is imposed on conventions in Kansas City.  This tax is a major source of funding for our Convention facilities and Visitors Association.

This change does increase the tax but eliminates an exemption for certain non-profit groups and would require most conventions with more than 9 guest rooms to the pay the tax.

Kansas City is one of the few cities in the country that has this exemption.

This exemption accounted for $9,943,587 in lost revenue to the city between 2007 and 2011.

Over half the revenue from the room tax is used for operating our Bartle Convention Center

The balance is used to and the Convention & Visitors Association and the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund –NTDF (which gives money each year to our own Martin City St. Patrick’s Parade).  This tax is the ONLY source of funds for NTDF.

The residents of Kansas City are NOT impacted by this change.  Only visitors to the City will be asked to pay this tax.

Question 3:  NO

KeepKCJobs

The City of Kansas City is asking voters to vote NO on Question 3.  This question is the result of a petition submitted by anti-nuclear activists who want to control the spread of global nuclear weapons but in actuality the question blocks the growth of businesses in Kansas City.

This question is opposed by every recognized business & labor organization in Kansas City that has weighed in on this issue including the Greater Kansas City Chamber, the South Kansas City Chamber and the Martin City CID.

Over the past several years, the anti-nuclear activists have attempted to block the completion of new National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) plant in south Kansas City at Hwy. 150 and Botts Road.  If their efforts had been successful Kansas City would have lost 2500 high-paying jobs at the facility.

Martin City CID restaurants are currently providing lunch food services to the plant five days a week through April until their cafeteria is open.  This is a major opportunity for these small businesses to augment their winter revenues.

The gist of the petition (Question 3) takes an interesting approach.  It would prohibit the City of Kansas City from using any type of financial incentive to attract businesses to the city that provide products or services to the NNSA facility or for any future expansion that the NNSA facility itself would need.

If we chase these businesses away you can expect them to locate in Kansas and surrounding communities instead.  That would cost our city thousands in new jobs and millions in tax revenues.

The NNSA plant in South Kansas City which is the current focus of the activists attention does NOT produce anything nuclear.  If manufactures non-nuclear components used to modernize and improve the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear deterrent, which is being significantly reduced not enlarged.

The activists ultimately want to scrap our nation’s policy of nuclear deterrence and replace it with unilateral U.S. nuclear disarmament regardless of whether North Korea, Iran or Iraq or others follow suit or not.

This question will not help them achieve this goal.  This question only hurts the business community in Kansas City by crippling the city’s ability to compete for new businesses and jobs that might provide products or services to the plant.

Question 3 – Vote NO!
